Legacy

Come as you are.

Create. Connect. Breathe. This is the art of living well.

Yoga and Art, a beloved small, women-owned studio in Hawaii Kai, proudly celebrates the evolution of its story—one that bridges generations, empowers community, and nurtures the art of living well.

A Legacy of Growth, Creativity, and Cross-Generational Empowerment

It began with a vision, shared passions, and conversations with close friends. Fittingly, it became communal space that the studio came to be.

In 2021, Melinda Mullis, a devoted student of the studio and seasoned entrepreneur, was approached by her yoga teacher during the height of the pandemic. As the world paused, he was planning for his next chapter—more golf, less teaching, more peaceful mornings—and he entrusted Melinda with continuing his legacy of the studio since opening in 2003. What began as a quiet yoga practice in a discreet Hawaii Kai studio became a bold step of faith.

“SheBrews Aloha was born in uncertainty, but with purpose,” Melinda recalls. “We started from scratch with had handwritten class cards, one teacher nearing retirement, and a group of dedicated members. The studio lacked recorded financials, had no website, and needed major renovations.”

Melinda saw something more to this opportunity. She saw a chance to share with her son, Chase Mullis-Kane, through a real-world experience in hopes he would pursue his own entrepreneurship journey. At 22, Chase took charge of operations, became a certified yoga instructor, and learned firsthand the value of building community from the ground up. We are so thankful to Chase for his continued dedication and effort in countless ways.

As we continue to develop our space, we look to create and nurture a close-knit community of new and familiar faces. Regardless of experience level or skill, our studio welcomes all individuals willing to learn, grow and connect with themselves and one another.

With its mantra, “The Art of Living Well,” Yoga & Art by SheBrews Aloha blossomed into a space for movement, the science of yoga, healing, and self-expression. From humble beginnings, it's growing into a collective of passionate instructors, creating space for every level of experience, every age, and every creative soul.

Meet Brenda Lam: A Journey of Alignment and Artistry

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Brenda’s yoga journey began during her five years of theatre study in college. One teacher introduced her to ancient yogic and meditative practices—an awakening that sparked a lifelong pursuit of balance, breath, and mindful movement. As a former Hong Kong rhythmic gymnastics representative, ballet dancer, and award-winning actress, Brenda knows both the beauty and the physical toll of performance.

She has traveled the world, led teams for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and organized festivals, shows and conference around the world. She holds an MA in Cultural Management, a BFA (Hons) in Drama, and was a speaker for Fresh Entrepreneurs Platform of Cultural Leadership Summit in Asia. Brenda brings not only her 200-hour yoga teacher training (200YTT) expertise, but also a rich background in cultural curation and international arts production. Today, she channels her creativity into yoga, mindfulness, meditation, Gene Keys, and baking sourdough bread for her two children and friends.

Brenda’s vision will help focus the studio on balancing the blend of the art of yoga with other forms or creative expression and community relationships. “My path has taken me from curating festivals across Asia to sharing yoga in intimate community spaces. With roots in arts leadership and a heart for creative movement, I now focus on growing a warm, welcoming space that blends diverse yoga styles, art classes, and mindful connection.” Says Brenda.

Melinda and Brenda invite dreamers, artists, seekers, and entrepreneurs to step into their own journey—knowing that with vision, resilience, and heart, anything is possible.
